I spent 25 years as a software engineer at Fortune 100 company, most of it on real-time systems for medical devices — work where a bug can genuinely hurt someone. That shaped how I think: test it, verify it, don't ship what you can't prove.

I didn't bring that discipline to my own money at first. I started trading during the dot-com bubble, chasing $250-a-day dreams off a laptop and a moving average. Five years in, I'd lost $27,489 finding out how hard trading actually is.

In 2007 I discovered algorithmic trading, and it named the real problem: I'd been gambling and calling it a strategy. A tested system beats a feeling you can't defend.

I started teaching what I'd learned in 2012 — first on the side, then full-time once I retired from engineering at 51.

Bitcoin came in almost by accident. I bought 0.5 BTC for about $400 in 2016 and traded it like anything else — bought some, sold some, missed the point. That changed in late 2022, watching Michael Saylor describe Bitcoin as engineered monetary energy instead of a coin. I remember the exact moment it landed: I don't have nearly enough Bitcoin. Over the next year I moved from 10% to 25% to 50% of my portfolio, and when BlackRock launched a spot Bitcoin ETF in February 2024, I moved everything — every stock, every bond — into Bitcoin. It's returned over 190% since.
